Acknowledged father

A man who has legally established his paternity of a child born outside of marriage, thereby assuming the rights and responsibilities of a legal parent. This formal recognition can occur through signing a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity, being named on the child's birth certificate with consent, or through a court order. Once paternity is acknowledged, the father has obligations for child support and rights to custody or visitation.
