  1. A principle or regulation governing conduct, procedure, or action, established by an authority or custom. In law, rules can be promulgated by legislative bodies, administrative agencies, or courts to provide specific guidance. These rules carry the force of law and must be followed by those within their jurisdiction.

  2. A set of explicit regulations or principles governing conduct or procedure within a particular area of law or a specific legal body. These directives are established by a court, legislature, or administrative agency to provide a framework for consistent and fair application of the law. Examples include the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which govern court proceedings in United States federal courts, and rules of professional conduct for lawyers.
