Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004489
An adverb meaning point by point, or in a series. In a legal context, it describes the practice of judges in a multi-judge panel each writing and publishing their own individual opinion for a case, rather than the court issuing a single collective opinion. This practice was common in the early history of the U.S. Supreme Court but was largely replaced by the single-opinion practice established by Chief Justice John Marshall.
