Silent partner

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004554

A partner who contributes capital to a business but takes no active part in managing it, and who may be kept out of public view. In a general partnership a silent partner is still personally liable for the firm's debts, since only a limited partner in a limited partnership has liability capped at the investment. Silent describes the partner's role in the business, not a separate legal status.
