Silencer
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004553
A device fitted to the muzzle of a firearm that reduces the sound of the shot by trapping and slowing the escaping propellant gases, and reduces recoil to a degree. Also called a suppressor, it is regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934, so transfers require federal registration and ATF approval. Congress cut the $200 making and transfer tax on suppressors to zero effective January 1, 2026, but registration still applies.
