Solitary confinement

A form of imprisonment in which an inmate is isolated from all human contact, except for correctional staff. This practice involves housing prisoners in single cells for 22 to 24 hours a day, with minimal or no access to communal activities. Its use is subject to international human rights standards, such as the Mandela Rules.
