Statute of frauds

A legal principle requiring certain types of contracts to be in writing and signed by the parties to be enforceable in court. This rule aims to prevent fraudulent claims of agreements that were never made. Contracts involving real estate, agreements that cannot be performed within one year, and contracts for the sale of goods above a certain value often fall under this statute.
