USA PATRIOT Act

A federal statute enacted in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, significantly expanding the surveillance and investigative powers of law enforcement agencies. It broadened the government's ability to monitor communications, access financial records, and detain non-citizens suspected of terrorism. Many provisions of the act have been modified or allowed to expire since its initial passage.
