The power of an executive branch official, such as a president or governor, to unilaterally reject a bill passed by a legislative body, thereby preventing it from becoming law. This power serves as a check on legislative authority, requiring the legislature to override the veto, typically by a supermajority vote. A pocket veto occurs when the executive does not sign a bill within a certain period and the legislature adjourns.
