Appropriations bill

A legislative act that authorizes the expenditure of public funds for specified government departments, agencies, and programs. This bill grants the legal authority to spend or obligate money from the treasury for particular purposes during a fixed period, typically one fiscal year. An appropriations bill must be passed by the legislature and signed into law by the executive before government agencies can make payments.
