Line-item veto

The power of an executive, such as a governor or president, to reject specific provisions or appropriations within a bill without vetoing the entire legislative measure. This allows the executive to eliminate objectionable spending items or policy riders while approving the rest of the bill. The U.S. Supreme Court declared the federal line-item veto unconstitutional in 1998.
