  1. A preliminary examination of prospective jurors or witnesses by a judge or attorneys to determine their suitability for service or testimony. This process aims to uncover biases, prejudices, or conflicts of interest that might affect impartiality. During voir dire, potential jurors are questioned about their backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences to select an unbiased panel.

  2. “Voir dire” is a French phrase meaning “to speak the truth." The process by which judges and lawyers select a trial jury from among those eligible to serve by questioning them to make certain that they would fairly decide the case.
