Describing an effect, process, or substance that results from human activities rather than natural causes. In atmospheric science, the term applies to greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels, pollutants from industrial processes, and land-use changes that affect climate patterns. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) quantifies the influence of anthropogenic factors on the global climate system in its assessment reports.
