Arched squall
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003602
A squall whose advancing cloud rises from the horizon in the shape of an arch, a term from older marine weather observing and associated especially with the coast of West Africa. The arched cloud moves quickly toward the zenith, with rain beneath it and strong gusts of wind following. It is one of the three traditional kinds of squall that sailors distinguished, alongside the descending squall and the white squall.
