Areal reduction factor

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003622

A factor, never above one, that converts a point rainfall depth of a given duration and return period into the average depth over a larger catchment area. It reflects the fact that heavy rain rarely covers an area uniformly, so the areal mean is lower than the point maximum. The factor decreases as area increases and rises toward one as storm duration increases.
