Areal precipitation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003621

The average depth of precipitation that falls over a specified geographic area, such as a watershed or river basin, during a given period. It is calculated by spatially averaging measurements from multiple rain gauges or by integrating data from weather radar. Methods for this calculation include the arithmetic mean, the Thiessen polygon method, and the isohyetal method, each offering different levels of accuracy depending on gauge network density.
