Ash devils
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003646
Small, swirling columns of ash and dust that form over hot, dry surfaces, similar in mechanism to dust devils. They are created by localized heating of the ground, which generates rising air currents that entrain loose ash particles. These phenomena are often observed in areas affected by recent volcanic activity or large fires.
