Steam devils

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009242

Small, rapidly rotating columns of visible water vapor that form over warm bodies of water, such as lakes or rivers, when cold air flows over them. These phenomena are analogous to dust devils but are composed of condensed water rather than dust. They are typically short-lived and occur during cold air outbreaks over relatively warm water surfaces.
