Base flow

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003842

The portion of streamflow that is sustained by the slow seepage of groundwater into a stream channel, rather than from direct surface runoff after a precipitation event. It represents the background discharge of a river and is the primary source of water during dry periods. Hydrograph separation is the technique used to distinguish base flow from stormflow in a stream's discharge record.
