Blowing snow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000341
Snow particles lifted from the ground by wind to a height of two meters or more, reducing horizontal visibility. This occurs when strong winds pick up loose snow, either freshly fallen or previously accumulated. It can significantly impair travel and is distinct from falling snow, which originates from clouds.
Blowing snow is wind-driven snow that reduces surface visibility. Blowing snow can be falling snow or snow that has already accumulated but is picked up and blown by strong winds. Blowing snow is usually accompanied by drifting snow.
