Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004009
A specialized high-speed photographic instrument designed to resolve the temporal structure of a lightning flash. It uses a system of rotating lenses or a moving film strip to displace the image of the lightning channel over time. This technique spatially separates the rapid sequence of events, such as the stepped leader and subsequent return strokes, onto the film.
