BPI pan

An instrument for measuring the rate of water evaporation, developed by the U.S. Bureau of Plant Industry. It consists of a circular, galvanized iron pan, 6 feet in diameter and 2 feet deep, buried in the soil so that its rim is 4 inches above the ground. The water level is maintained at or slightly below the level of the surrounding ground.
