Floating pan

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005627

An evaporation pan that floats on the surface of a lake or reservoir to measure the rate of evaporation from the water body itself. The pan is moored in place, and changes in the water level inside it, after accounting for precipitation, indicate the amount of evaporation. Data from floating pans are considered more representative of actual lake evaporation than data from land-based pans because they experience similar water temperature and wind conditions.
