Carbon dioxide equivalence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004162

A metric for comparing the emissions of different greenhouse gases based on their global warming potential (GWP). It converts the warming impact of a quantity of another greenhouse gas into the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that would have the equivalent impact over a specified time horizon, typically 100 years. For example, over 100 years, one tonne of methane has a CO2 equivalence of about 28 tonnes, reflecting its higher GWP.
