Chip log

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010429

A historical nautical instrument for measuring a vessel's speed through water, providing data for early marine weather observations. It consisted of a weighted wood panel (the chip) attached to a line with knots tied at regular intervals. The number of knots that unspooled over a specific time, measured by a sandglass, indicated the ship's speed in the unit of knots, where one knot equals one nautical mile per hour.
