Connate water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004599
Water that was trapped in the pore spaces of a sedimentary rock during its original deposition and has been held there since its formation. This fossil water is isolated from the active hydrologic cycle and has not been in contact with the atmosphere for geologic periods of time. Connate water is typically highly saline, having originated as seawater or having dissolved minerals from the surrounding rock matrix over millions of years.
