Fossil water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010512
Groundwater that has remained sealed in an aquifer for an extended period, often thousands or millions of years. This water infiltrated the ground during a past geologic or climatic period when conditions were different from the present, and it is not being replenished under the current climate. Because it is a non-renewable resource on human timescales, its extraction for agriculture or drinking water leads to the depletion of the aquifer, such as the Ogallala Aquifer in the United States.
