Artesian aquifer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003636
A confined aquifer where groundwater is under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the aquifer in a well, without the need for pumping. This occurs when the aquifer is sandwiched between impermeable layers and recharged at a higher elevation. The water level in an artesian well, if not flowing freely, will rise to a potentiometric surface above the aquifer's upper boundary.
