Consumptive use

The portion of water withdrawn from a source that is not returned to the immediate water environment because it has been evaporated, transpired by plants, or incorporated into products. It represents a net loss of water from a watershed or aquifer system. In agriculture, consumptive use is nearly equivalent to evapotranspiration, which is the total water consumed by a crop for its growth.
