Effective precipitation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000838

  1. The portion of total precipitation that becomes available for plant growth or contributes to streamflow and groundwater recharge. It excludes water lost to immediate evaporation, surface runoff that does not infiltrate, or deep percolation beyond the root zone. This value is a key input for hydrological models and agricultural water management.

  2. 1) That part of the precipitation that produces runoff.

    2) A weighted average of current and antecedent precipitation that is "effective" in correlating with runoff.

    3) That part of the precipitation falling on an irrigated area that is effective in meeting the consumptive use requirements.
