Effective roughness length
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005285
A parameter in atmospheric boundary layer meteorology that characterizes the aerodynamic roughness of a surface, influencing the wind profile near the ground. It represents the height above the surface where the mean wind speed theoretically becomes zero due to friction. This length scale is influenced by surface features such as vegetation, buildings, and terrain irregularities, and it is a key input for models of atmospheric dispersion.
