Roughness sublayer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008620

The lowest part of the atmospheric boundary layer, immediately above the surface, where the flow is directly influenced by individual roughness elements such as vegetation, buildings, or terrain features. Within this layer, the mean wind profile deviates significantly from logarithmic, and turbulence characteristics are highly dependent on the geometry of the roughness elements. Its depth is typically on the order of the height of the roughness elements.
