Aerodynamic roughness length

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003334

A parameter representing the effective height above a surface where the wind speed theoretically becomes zero due to the presence of obstacles and surface irregularities. It quantifies the roughness of a surface in terms of its impact on airflow, influencing the vertical wind profile in the atmospheric boundary layer. Typical values range from a few millimeters for smooth surfaces to several meters for urban areas.
