Effective atmosphere

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005280

The vertical portion of the atmosphere that produces a measurable effect on a specific physical process, such as electromagnetic radiation transfer or the trajectory of an object. The concept is context-dependent, as the height of the effective atmosphere for radio wave propagation differs from that affecting satellite orbital decay. Its upper boundary is typically defined where the atmospheric density or composition becomes negligible for the phenomenon in question.
