The abrupt arrival of a cooler air mass, marked by a sharp drop in temperature and a shift in wind direction, that follows a period of hot weather. In southeastern Australia, this phenomenon is associated with the passage of a cold front or a southerly trough, bringing relief from summer heatwaves. The change is often accompanied by strong, gusty winds and sometimes a band of cloud or thunderstorms.
