Wind-shift line

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003097

  1. A narrow zone across which there is an abrupt change in wind direction, often accompanied by changes in wind speed, temperature, and humidity. These lines are frequently associated with fronts, squall lines, or sea breezes, marking a boundary between different air masses. A sudden wind shift can indicate the approach of severe weather or a change in local weather patterns.

  2. A long, but narrow axis across which the winds change direction (usually veer).
