Tropopause break line

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009812

A narrow zone where the tropopause undergoes an abrupt change in altitude, separating distinct air masses in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. This discontinuity is associated with strong horizontal temperature gradients and high wind speeds, often marking the location of a jet stream. It represents a boundary between air with different static stabilities and chemical compositions.
