Cornice
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010448
An overhanging mass of snow formed by wind deposition on the leeward side of a ridge or cliff. These formations develop when wind-blown snow accumulates and compacts, extending horizontally beyond the supporting terrain. Cornices pose a hazard to mountaineers and skiers due to their instability and potential for sudden collapse, often breaking off under their own weight or external pressure.
