Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004752
A device used to measure and record the maximum water level, or crest, reached in a stream or river during a flood event. A common design consists of a vertical pipe containing a wooden or aluminum staff and a small amount of granulated cork. As water rises in the pipe, the cork floats and adheres to the staff at the highest point reached, leaving a clear mark after the water recedes.
