Cryoplankton

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004785

Microscopic organisms, primarily algae and bacteria, that inhabit frozen environments such as sea ice, glaciers, and snowpacks. These organisms are adapted to extreme cold and low light conditions, forming complex microbial communities within the ice matrix. They contribute to primary production in polar regions and influence ice albedo.
