Gross primary production

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006079

The total amount of organic matter, or biomass, produced by photosynthetic organisms within an ecosystem over a given period. It represents the total carbon fixed by plants through photosynthesis before any respiration losses. This metric is a fundamental measure of ecosystem productivity and carbon uptake from the atmosphere, typically expressed in units of mass per unit area per unit time.
