Damming

The process where an air mass is blocked or impeded by a topographic barrier, such as a mountain range, leading to its accumulation and often enhanced precipitation on the windward side. This phenomenon is frequently observed with cold air masses impinging on the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. It can result in prolonged periods of cloudiness and rain or snow.
