Deformed ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000673

  1. Sea ice that has been altered from its original flat state by pressure, resulting in features such as hummocks, ridges, and rafted ice. This deformation occurs when ice floes collide or are subjected to strong winds and currents. It significantly increases the thickness and roughness of the ice cover, impacting navigation and heat exchange.

  2. In hydrologic terms, a general term for ice which has been squeezed together and forced upwards and downwards in places. Subdivisions are rated
ice, ridge ice, hummocked ice, and other similar deformations.
