Pressure ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002122

  1. Sea ice that has been deformed by compressive forces, resulting in ridges, hummocks, and rafted ice. This deformation occurs when ice floes collide or are pushed against coastlines or other ice masses by wind and currents. Pressure ice can create formidable obstacles for navigation and can be several meters thick.

  2. Floating sea, river, or lake ice that has been deformed, altered, or forced upward in pressure ridges by the lateral stresses of any combination of wind, water currents, tides, waves, and surf.
