Duff

The layer of decomposing organic matter, primarily fallen leaves, twigs, and other plant debris, that accumulates on the forest floor. This material acts as an insulating layer, retaining moisture in the soil and providing nutrients as it breaks down. In dry conditions, duff can become highly flammable, contributing to the intensity and spread of wildfires.
