Emission standard

A legal limit on the amount of a specific pollutant that is permitted to be released into the environment from a particular source. These standards are set by regulatory agencies to control air and water pollution and protect public health. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sets standards for vehicle exhaust and industrial smokestack emissions.
