Maximum contaminant level

The highest legally permissible concentration of a substance in a public water supply, as determined by a regulatory agency. These standards are set to protect public health from the effects of long-term exposure to contaminants in drinking water, which can originate from atmospheric deposition, industrial discharge, or natural sources. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establishes these levels, known as MCLs, under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
