Maximum entropy method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007144

A technique for spectral analysis that estimates a power spectrum from a limited set of autocorrelation data, such as a climate time series. The method selects the spectrum that is most consistent with the known data while being maximally noncommittal about information not present in the data, thereby avoiding unwarranted assumptions. This approach is particularly effective for resolving sharp spectral features from short data records where traditional Fourier methods may fail.
