Emission spectrum

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005360

The range of wavelengths or frequencies of electromagnetic radiation emitted by a substance when its excited atoms or molecules return to a lower energy state. Each atmospheric gas has a unique emission spectrum, which allows scientists to identify and quantify its presence using spectroscopic instruments. For example, the emission spectrum of atomic oxygen contributes to the aurora.
