Excited state

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005499

A state of an atom or molecule where one or more electrons have absorbed energy and moved to a higher energy level than their ground state. In atmospheric chemistry, molecules in an excited state are more reactive and can participate in chemical reactions that would not occur otherwise. The return of an excited molecule to its ground state often involves the emission of light, a process known as fluorescence or phosphorescence.
